A fascinating new Harvard University contest seeks to recognize “positive deviance,” or pockets of excellence, in the healthcare industry and propagate them as far and wide as possible. The contest emerged from a Harvard survey of healthcare industry leaders who told researchers that their biggest problem was disseminating ideas throughout the industry. As as result, the research team created the Health Acceleration Challenge to identify innovations in healthcare and get the word out about them.
To qualify for inclusion in the challenge, an innovation must be deployed in at least one setting with credible evidence that it is valuable in that environment. The innovations must also affect the cost or quality of healthcare, show evidence of success, and be sharable in other health care settings. Finalists in the challenge will share a $150,000 prize fund, and will be featured in a Harvard case study. Entries are due at the end of September, so stay tuned for the results.
